Our position

Why human-written fiction matters.

Fiction has always been one of the most intimate things a human being can make. A story is a writer's interior world — their fears, obsessions, the specific texture of their grief — compressed into language and offered to a stranger. That act of transmission, from one consciousness to another, is what makes literature matter.

AI cannot do that. Not because the output isn't sometimes grammatically correct, or even occasionally evocative. But because there is no interior world behind it. No fear. No obsession. No grief. The pattern-matching that produces AI text is fundamentally different from the process that produces human writing — and readers who have read enough of both can feel the difference, even when they can't articulate it.

The problem isn't just quality.

The flood of AI-generated content doesn't just dilute quality — it makes it nearly impossible for human authors to be found. When you can generate ten thousand words in seconds, the economics of attention collapse. Real writers, who spend months or years on a book, are buried under an avalanche of synthetic text optimized for search ranking rather than human experience.

Dark fiction gets hit hardest. The genres we publish — dark fantasy, romantasy, horror, grimdark, queer fiction — are already marginalized by the mainstream market. They don't fit the safe, mass-market mold. Add AI to the mix and the signal-to-noise ratio for readers looking for something genuinely transgressive and human becomes almost impossible to navigate.

What we do about it.

Every author who publishes on Marrow & Ink agrees, as a condition of the platform, that their work is entirely human-written. No AI drafting. No AI polishing. No AI anything in the prose.

Beyond the pledge, we run forensic metadata analysis on every manuscript uploaded to the platform. We check authoring software signatures, creation timestamps, revision histories, and other forensic markers. No verification system is infallible — but we do more than almost anyone else in this space, and we take violations seriously.

When you buy a story on Marrow & Ink, you're not just buying words. You're buying a guarantee: a human being sat down and wrote this for you. That still means something.

“Own the un-generated.”

The pledge.
